This semester-long class is being taught at University of Michigan Department of Dance during the Winter 2019 semester. Introduction to Contemporary Dance introduces students to a dance style that combines elements of modern and jazz dance. Contemporary dance is centered on mobility and isolation throughout the body, a grounded distribution of weight, and use of momentum. This course emphasizes dancing with a sense of whole-body awareness, physical alignment and creativity. The class structure includes a full-body warm-up, technical exercises that incorporate jumps and floor-work, and learning contemporary dance choreography. The semester culminates with an informal performance of a contemporary dance piece that will be performed at the Non-Major Dance showing.
